Good People of vitruta: Oğulcan Adıgüzel

Oğulcan, welcome to Good People of vitruta! Let’s start with the classic question: Who is Oğulcan Adıgüzel? How did you start, how is it going, and what are you up to now?

I studied architectural restoration and then went on to complete my bachelor's degree in architecture. My professional and academic journey began simultaneously in 2010. Although I couldn’t fully experience student life, I have never regretted it. Balancing work with my education allowed me to apply what I learned in theory to real-world situations, which significantly accelerated the development of my career.

What is architectural restoration? It's not a profession we are all familiar with, but as residents of Istanbul, we certainly understand the importance of restoration. However, we don't always know what restoration professionals do or the scope of their work. Let's learn from you! :)

We are responsible for protecting historical and cultural assets by combining technical and aesthetic perspectives. Restoration projects are typically prepared by architects. During the work carried out with a survey, we ensure that the structure reaches its best condition without damage. We review potential issues and ensure that all research is done before starting the project. Afterward, we prepare the project based on the survey, which contains all the details about the structure. Restoration applications include techniques such as strengthening, integration, renewal, rebuilding, cleaning, and transportation.

How did you get interested in this field and choose it as your career path?

I was introduced to restoration by my mentor, Architect Şenay Kahramanoğlu, under whom I started my career. She has been my greatest teacher, and I still continue my education alongside her. Since the day I stepped into this field with Şenay Hanım, I have been part of many exciting restoration projects. With each completed project, I feel more and more connected to this profession.

In your 12 years of experience, which project has been the most enjoyable for you?

I have enjoyed working on all of my projects. However, the Kandilli mansion project, which was also my first construction site, holds a special place for me.

You and I often meet in Pera, which is actually not too far from your professional domain. What would you say about the significance of Pera to you?

Pera holds a very important place for me. The desire to restore the historic buildings of Pera was one of the main reasons I chose this profession. Although most of my time is spent on various construction sites, it’s always a pleasure to come to my office in the shade of the beautiful wisteria during the spring.

You've known Pera for quite some time, and you're familiar with the changes it has gone through in the past decade. How would you describe the recent transformation of Pera?

Despite the significant changes Beyoğlu has gone through in the last decade, I believe Meşrutiyet Caddesi has managed to preserve its unique character compared to other parts of Pera. Over time, it has become an area with more loyal visitors who are deeply connected to its essence.

What places in Pera would you recommend for us? Cafes, restaurants, bars?

If I were to split my day in Pera by hours, I would start with Pizzeria Pera around lunchtime. While it’s famous for its pizzas, it's also a very valuable Italian trattoria in Istanbul. After work, I frequently head to Comedus, which feels like my second home. For special occasions, I love the ambiance and food at Aheste—it always makes me happy. To end the night, I enjoy sipping cocktails and tequila shots at Baylo. :)

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for those interested in restoration?

Since we’ve talked so much about Pera, I would particularly recommend "İstanbul Apartmanları: Hikayeleri ve Anıları ile Beyoğlu" by M. Serdar Kılıç for those curious about the stories behind the apartment buildings in the Beyoğlu area. It was published recently and is a great resource; reading it is truly a pleasure.
